Flying/Ferry

Anguilla has their own airport; however, you will usually find it cheaper to fly into Sint Maarten at the Princess Juliana International Airport. Remember: the first time you fly to the island, you will need a return ticket within 90 days. This is not always checked, but you do not want to be put in a situation without one.

Leaving the Airport

There are two different options for traveling to Anguilla from the airport. Both options work fine. It is all about preference and your budget.

(1) Private Ferry

  • $70US per person CASH ONLY
  • Pick up right outside of the airport
  • You can book the ferry when you arrive at the airport or book ahead of time online at https://calypsochartersanguilla.com

(2) Public Ferry at Marigot in Saint Martin

  • $20 cab (2 people) OR $25 cab (3 people)…cabs are right outside of the airport and will take you to Marigot (You can also tell them you are going to the public ferry)…CASH ONLY
  • $20 ferry fee…CASH ONLY
  • $5 port tax…CASH ONLY

Arriving in Anguilla

Upon arriving in Anguilla, make sure you have your SJSM acceptance letter. The border patrol can be intimidating, but just tell them you are a new student at the medical school. Anguilla does tax on imports so when they ask what is in all of your suitcases, just tell them you are moving to the island and you brought your clothes, toiletries, and school supplies. Because of this, make sure nothing you bring has any tags or looks brand new (i.e. a new iPad still in its box).

What now?

A taxi to anywhere on the island is going to cost a minimum of $20…CASH ONLY. Make sure you make arrangements for a meeting to find housing and a hotel (or bed and breakfast) for your first few nights there. A HUGE factor to note: Anguilla really does not have more than a few street names. The locals know everything by landmark. This sounds intimidating at first, but you will find your way around pretty fast.

Tips

  • Bring enough cash for traveling. Most restaurants will take credit cards, but cabs/ferries will not.
  • When packing, wrap any belonging that look expensive up in other clothes. Put your valuables hidden in your bag. This is so you will not be taxed through customs.
